Chapter 35 Gasoline
Chapter 35 Gasoline
What was with that line of thought? Why would she continue pursuing a relationship again with that
scum named Norman?
Christopher’s words pulled Diane back to reality, and she reflexively shook her head. “No, my hatred for
him can’t get any worse than this. I had no intention of meeting him. It’s actually…”
Just as Emilia’s name was about to escape her lips, Diane paused. After a moment of thought, she
decided to tell the truth anyway.
“It’s actually Emilia. She accepted a bag from Norman, and she lured me with that.”
This answer took Christopher by surprise. He didn’t speak, but a burning light blazed in his eyes as he
eyed Diane in the darkness.
“How credible are your words? Your sister told me that you wanted to see your ex-husband.”
Although he was suspicious, his heart inexplicably lightened up a little; he even said the word ‘ex-
husband’ with a heavy gravitas. On the other hand, Diane frowned as her disappointment toward Emilia
grew even more.
“I don’t want to explain; believe it if you will. It doesn’t matter if you don’t.”
“What’s with that attitude?” Frustration lodged itself in Christopher’s heart. Did this girl not know that he
had stayed at home for a whole day just to see her? He even put off work for this. When he asked her
about this, she was dismissive and rude. Was she trying to make him angry?
“Diane, you think that I can’t figure out what to do with you, am I right?”
Fury surged within him. Meanwhile, Diane was simply exasperated. “I’m telling the truth but you won’t
believe me. What else do you want me to say then?”
“You…” Christopher realized that he was rendered speechless by this woman, for she had turned the
question back on him.
What could he do to her?
He didn’t know what he could do either.
“Go back and lie down.” He released his grip on Diane and pushed her back onto the bed, his fury
having ebbed away into a dull anger.
Diane fell back to sit on the bed. She looked up at the angry man; after some thought, she decided to
speak anyway. “Thank you for yesterday, and I’m sorry for adding more to your plate.”
“There’s no need to thank me,” Christopher coldly replied, and he turned to walk into the greenhouse to
get his book. Just as he was about to reach the entrance, he suddenly stopped and said, “Norman
hasn’t died, but there’s little difference between this and death for him. If you want to see him in the
future, you can look for him in prison.”
Diane’s forehead was tightly scrunched up as she looked at Christopher’s back. She hated his frosty
demeanor, and she hated it even more when he unjustly accused her.
“Hold it right there.”
Diane herself was very much surprised to find herself blurting that out. Likewise, Christopher was also
taken aback by it.
How dare this woman order him to stop with that tone of hers?
He looked back and eyed Diane as she sat on the bed. He did not take another step.
Diane stood up, but she didn’t approach him either. Instead, she stood by the bed and spoke to him.
“Regardless of whether you believe me or not, it’s the gospel truth that I didn’t run all the way there to
see Norman. Also, please don’t try to guess my thoughts with that petty mind of yours. I may be a
woman, and I may not be as strong as you are, but I’m not so much of a weak-minded person that I’d
try to rekindle an old flame that has long since burned out. If I had the time, it would be better for me to
try and cozy up to you instead, don’t you think so? Don’t speak to me with that harsh tone. I don’t like
that.”
Christopher was quiet. Over the years, he had been surrounded by far too many women. They were all © NôvelDrama.Org - All rights reserved.
from different backgrounds, and they were as varied in personality as they came. The number of
women he had met could form a whole line to the U.S. from where they were. They had used various
methods and tricks to please him, and they all wanted to get close to him. None of them had ever
rebuked him like Diane did just now—she had requested him not to speak to her with that harsh tone of
his.
She was… practically absurd.
As he eyed the petite woman who stood there with her back straight, Christopher felt odd on the inside.
Although he was clearly angry, he could only let it simmer inside himself. He couldn’t let that anger out.
After glaring at her for a long while, he finally said through gritted teeth, “You ask too much of me.”
With that, he left—he couldn’t be bothered to continue humoring Diane.
Women are troublesome, Christopher thought to himself in irritation.
After Christopher had left, Diane’s legs gave out on her; she ended up collapsing to sit on the edge of
the bed. She had only just sat there for a few moments when a maid came in with a delicious meal for
her. She picked at her food, and once she had showered and taken her medication, she fell asleep
again. This time, she slept far more soundly than she did the previous night. When she woke up the
next day, her head didn’t feel heavy anymore. She felt a lot better.
Since Diane woke up late, there was no sight of Christopher when she walked out of her bedroom.
When she went downstairs, the maid caught sight of her and said, “Breakfast is ready, Mrs. Wayne.
Would you like to have it now?”
Since she had slept for a long while, Diane also felt hungry. Without saying anything else, she went to
the dining room.
As the maid headed into the kitchen to bring the food to the table, she smiled. “You have to eat more;
Mr. Wayne specially ordered me to look after you. By the way, he said that he has some business to
attend to this morning, so he went to the company. He’ll be back soon, and he wants you to rest
properly at home. He has already asked your employer to give you a month’s worth of leave.”
“Huh?” Diane went rigid for a moment, afraid to believe what she heard. “He applied a month’s leave
for me?”
“That’s right.” The maid nodded, and she spoke again after thinking for a while. “I think it was Erin who
said that Mr. Wayne got you your leave because he wants you to stay home and rest. His heart actually
hurts for you.”
She felt weird hearing herself being addressed as Mrs. Wayne.
Upon hearing that, however, Diane’s ears went up in flames.
His heart ached for her?
Did it really?
“Mrs. Wayne, please eat while the food is still hot. Don’t wait until it’s cold,” the maid reminded her.
Diane returned to reality and stiffly answered, “Oh, okay.”
Meanwhile, her mind wandered as she thought about the maid’s earlier words; even her breakfast
spread tasted like nothing as she placed them in her mouth. She was eating absent-mindedly when her
phone suddenly rang. As Diane picked it up and looked at the screen, she noticed that it was a call
from her mother, Maria.
“Where are you, Diane? Hurry up and come back. Your mother-in-law is kicking up an unholy racket.”
It turned out that Elizabeth had gone to her home.
Diane was immediately wary. Since she no longer had the appetite to continue eating, she put her
cutlery down and stood up. “What is she doing there this time?”
“She brought a canister of gasoline with her, and she insists on meeting you; she’s going to burn our
house down if she doesn’t get to see you. She even asked me about her son. What did you do now,
you d*mn girl? Get back here now.”
Gasoline!
A headache hit her. “Got it. I’ll be there right away.”
With that, she hung up. Diane didn’t even dare to waste another second and frantically rushed upstairs
to change her clothes. After she had done that, she called the police.
Gasoline was not something to be taken lightly. Her parents were unable to call the police due to
Elizabeth’s current threats, so she could only call the police on her behalf while she was here. She
couldn’t be bothered to think about anything else, and she made up her mind to go back and take a
look at the situation first.
Diane rushed down the stairs, only to be stopped by the maid. “Where are you going? Mr. Wayne told
you to rest here.”
“I need to go home; something has happened back there. As for Christopher… If he asks later, please
tell him that I’ve gone out.”
She didn’t have the time to elaborate, so Diane side-stepped the maid and dashed away.
Since Christopher’s house had a chauffeur, she reached the Cornell Residence in no time.
The Cornells lived in an old apartment building which didn’t have any elevators. Nonetheless, Diane
could already hear the ruckus one floor above her as she ran up the stairs.
That wasn’t all—she also smelled the acrid smell of gasoline.
Did that sicko actually splash gasoline by the entrance of her home?
Diane squeezed past the crowd in a panic to reach her family home. When she arrived, the apartment
door was wide open before her eyes. Elizabeth sat by the door with an opened canister of gasoline
lying right next to her, and the ground was wet and slick probably because of the gasoline.
In Elizabeth’s hand was a lighter, its flames dancing and reaching for the sky.
