Chapter 626 True Devotion
When she unlocked her phone, she realized that the family chat group was filled with hundreds of
messages.
All of them were talking about the manor and telling her to explain herself to her uncle and aunt.
As a result, she exited the group. There's no way I'm going to give in to their demands that I take
responsibility.
By then, Tobias had left for an hour. The time he was gone, Skylar felt as if time had slowed down to a
crawl where every minute felt like an entire hour.
In the meantime, she changed her passcode to “111111.” Worried that she would forget, she even
jotted it down in her notes.
Given how insensitive she was with numbers, she would always end up forgetting her passcodes.
After heading upstairs, she saw Madelyn carrying a basket of dirty laundry. Thinking back to the night
before, she stopped the latter.
Lowering herself toward the basket, she picked out Tobias and her undergarments and spoke as swiftly Text property © Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org.
as she could, “Going forward, I'll wash these myself.”
As someone sensible, Madelyn didn't inquire about the reason. After all, she would usually throw them
into the washing machine. Since Skylar wanted to wash them by hand, there was no reason for her to
object.
Subsequently, Skylar brought Tobias' black briefs to the washbasin. She didn't want to trouble Madelyn
with them, especially when she saw the white stains left from the night before.
While Skylar was washing and wringing the underwear dry, her phone vibrated on the countertop. After
shaking the water off her hands and seeing that it was Penelope, she put the latter on speaker.
Ever since she failed to help Penelope join the entertainment industry, their relationship soured.
Subsequently, Skylar called her up a few times to talk but was rebuffed every single time with the
excuse she was busy.
After her olive branch had been spurned repeatedly, Skylar didn't dare contact Penelope anymore. She
didn't want to invite trouble.
“What are you up to?”
Looking at the wet brief, Skylar replied, “Washing underwear.”
Penelope giggled in response. “You wash your boyfriend's underwear despite being a famous actress?
You truly are a devoted girlfriend.”
From Penelope's tone, Skylar noticed that the former's mood had improved significantly from before.
She retorted, “How do you know I'm washing a man's brief? How have you recently been? I have been
too busy to visit you.”
Penelope sighed. “What else can I do? My parents are raising my daughter for me and complain every
day that I'm a burden to them. Moreover, I feel bad for letting my daughter grow up in such a small
house.
After drying her hands, with Tobias' towel, Skylar turned off the speaker and picked up the phone.
Given that Penelope was staying in the same neighborhood as she did, Skylar figured that someone
must have told Penelope of the rumors related to the redevelopment.
Therefore, she didn't continue Penelope's topic and waited for the latter to reveal the objective of the
call.
Penelope added, “That b*stard, Brayden, has never visited his daughter nor paid child support. I really
don't know what's going to happen to my child in the future. My parents are nagging me every day to
move to a bigger place because the small house is filled with my child's belongings. However, where
am I going to find the money?”
While listening, a sudden sense of disappointment crept into Skylar when it dawned upon her that she
and her best friend could no longer talk heart to heart.
She never envisioned that one day, Penelope had to speak in such an indirect manner.
Given the pressure heaped upon her on all sides, she realized that it was difficult for her to keep the old
manor. Maintaining her stance would turn her into someone hated by friends and family.
She replied candidly, “I know you're trying to persuade me about the redevelopment, which I have no
objections to. It's Tobias who refuses to demolish the place, and there's nothing I can do about it.
Therefore, don't listen to the rumors outside that blame me for it. After all, businessmen always put
profit first. Besides, do you actually think I'm important enough for Tobias to do something like that for
me?”
