Chapter 16
Chapter 16
If I can be honest, my response will be ' You hate me, Xander. We have never been close all these years.'
But I can't say anything about the past. My only option is to lie. I'm doing what's right.
" Well...I don't have your photos at all. I got it from Henry yesterday to make you remember. We know each other but not close, Xander." I told and I'm left without a reply. This conversation about us shouldn't continue.
" So, are you not hungry? Or do you want any other..." that's when I noticed why he isn't eating.
" I don't want to eat with my left hand. I guess you can take this. I don't feel hungry anymore.
" Oh, shit. Sorry. I forget your right arm was broken, not the left." I said, looking unsure what to do or say next.
" Yeah, it could have been my left." He tapped the table, looking at the dustbin.
" You are not throwing it away. Are you?"
" I...if you want, you can eat."
" No. That's not what I meant. You can't stop eating just because you're right arms broken..."
" I could feed you if it's okay..." I hesitated to finish the sentence.
" Um...I don't want some unknown nurse to feed me until I'm better. So, you could help me." He looked uncertain but agreed.
I helped him take one bite. " Atleast, I got this one hand to help myself," He said, laughing.
" Yeah, and you should be grateful for your legs. You don't need a wheelchair."
" That's terrible to imagine. Now, show me my photos, Madison,"
I showed him his photos when he was a high school student. That's all I had on my phone. But I could show him his Instagram account. But he doesn't have this phone. It was already got smashed when the car ran over it.
" I look good compared to now. Do you have any pictures of my parents or Henry? They are the only person you mentioned."
" I don't have your parents picture but I got Henry's photo." I scrolled again and showed him, Henry. By the time, I helped him finish the sandwich. NôvelD(ram)a.ôrg owns this content.
" Why aren't they here? Doesn't my parents care about me?" Suddenly he asked.
" Don't think like that, Xander. They are aborad. It may take time to visit you."
" Even if they are abroad, they could come here in a day or two? Right?"
" They can. But Henry said they will visit you in a week." I told the truth.
" A week? That's how important am I to them? It feels like they will visit me once I get better." He said taking the last bite of the sandwich from my hand. I don't have any words to assure him. I feel like he's right. I don't want to blame them but their business seems important more than Xander.
" We can wait. They will defiently come to see you soon." I said, opening his Instagram account.
" This is your account. Look into your posts and tell me if you remember something," I gave my phone to him. He scrolled the posts of his photos with his left hand. Meanwhile, I left the table to throw the paper plate.
" Who is this? Why did I post something like this?" Xander asked me when I came back. I looked at the picture, where Xander is kissing Veronica. Oh, no, should I be the one to explain it.
" It's...it's your girlfriend,"
" Is it? I still can't recollect anything. But I don't like to post a private moment on Instagram. Why did I do that? " He turned off the phone and give it back to me.
" Maybe you liked to tell everyone that she's your girlfriend. Don't blame your past Xander."
" First of all, I don't feel like it's myself. I'm nobody. That's how I see myself. So, what's her name?"
" Your girlfriend? her name's Veronica. She's been your girlfriend for more than five years I guess. I'm not sure. I don't really know about your relationship." I answered. I hate to talk about someone who betrayed me. Maybe Henry should answer all Xander's question instead of me.
" Ohh, why hasn't she contacted me? Does she know that I'm admitted here," he asked without much interest in it.
" She would have known by now. Henry would have told her. Can we go back to the room? You need to rest."
" Okay, I'm feeling a little better after coming out here." He stood up and got hold of my hands. I felt my heartbeat raise just like yesterday. But I don't want to react and make him stay away from me. I walked with him silently until we reach the room.
I'm spending all my time with Xander because he thinks he got no other person is there for him. Maybe, he would talks with Veronica if she comes back. But that would be chaos. She will recollect the past and drive him crazy by filling up with all memories which won't make sense to him. I have no idea how he will react or how it will affect him.
Xander settled in his bed and I sat in the corner of the bed, exploring my phone.
My phone rang at the time. It's an unknown number. How it could be? It shouldn't be Veronica's number.
" Who is it?" Xander asked.
" I don't know." I started on my phone and atleast decided to take the call. " Hello, is this Madison? I'm Xander's mom. Are you with my son? How is he? Does he remembers anything. What did the doctor tell?" She asked a lot of questions anxiously.
" Yeah, I'm Madison. Xander's doing well now. But his right arm broken. The doctor said he will recover in two weeks. But till now, there's no solution for his memory loss. I'm sorry to say this, Mrs..."
"Mrs Stevans. Thank you so much for helping my son. I don't know how am I going to pay you for saving my son's life." She got emotional on the phone. I'm glad she called for Xander. He's going to feel better.
" Your welcome, Mrs Stevans. You don't need to pay me for helping your son. I hope you will be here soon for him."
" I wish I could. Right now, it's too difficult for me to cross countries. But I will be there in a week. Can you take care of my son for a week? I'm sorry for putting this burden on you. I could even pay you for it."
" No. I don't need any payment. Helping someone is out of humanity. I don't want to do it for payment." I told her even when I'm not financially good. If Sofia knows I refused the payment, she's going to yell at me.
" I don't know if everyone has a heart like you. Anyways, I will pay you once I came to visit my son. By the way, Is my son awake? I would like to talk to him. I just want to hear his voice." She asked. I know Xander heard what she said. But he didn't raise his hand to get the phone. Instead, he avoided eye contact.
" Xander, your mom is in line?" I whispered.
" I can't talk, Madison. Not in this state when I don't even remember my mom. I can't handle this right now."
