Chapter 120
Chapter 120
“You’ve probably investigated this before, but five years ago, if not for Joseline’s intervention, I would’ve gotten engaged with Hanson. Even though many years have passed, I’m still vexed by it. So, I thought of doing this as revenge on a whim,” Angeline answered.
Upon hearing that, the edges of Evander’s lips curved upward mockingly.
If it weren’t for the fact that he had made some effort to understand her, he would’ve been fooled by her explanation.
A layer of sweat covered her palm as she gritted her teeth anxiously and continued, “Actually, it’s also because I want to take my revenge on Joseline. I suspect she’s not a member of the Sorelle family and that she’s the reason for my parents’ deaths.”
Genuine agony flashed past her eyes when she said that.
Evander’s gaze darkened as he gradually let go of her chin. Feuds between prominent families are a common sight. It’s not impossible for immoral acts to be committed during those feuds. I’m used to this kind of lifestyle, but Angeline isn’t.
After staying silent for a while, Evander piped up, “You can come to me for help.”
Angeline lifted her head and stared at him in shock. Is he offering me aid? But he’s a CEO. Why would he want to help me deal with my matters?
For some reason, she blurted without choosing her words, “Are you expecting something in return for helping me, Mr. Golding?”
The moment she ended her sentence, the expression on Evander’s face darkened. The surrounding temperature rapidly decreased as well.
Instead of saying another word, he turned and left the kitchen.
Staring at his back, Angeline wasn’t sure how to apologize. She slapped her forehead with remorse, wishing she could just bite off her tongue. Why did I have to say that? His influence is vast. If he’s willing to help me out, then the risk of danger I may face will be lesser than if I’m still working with Jonathan. Besides, what can Evander gain from me when I’m in this situation?
After toiling away in the kitchen for a while, Angeline served three plates of steaming hot pasta in the dining room.
She turned to the father and daughter sitting on the couch and shouted, “Pasta’s ready! Come and eat!”
Floretta, who was battling against her drowsiness, immediately widened her eyes and hopped into the kitchen. Then she put on the small bib Angeline bought for her.
There were many things she learned in kindergarten, including how to eat by herself. Although she still wasn’t great at twirling pasta with a fork yet, she had shown significant improvement.
As she slurped the pasta, she praised, “This is so good! Everything you make is tasty, Angel.”
Elated to hear that, Angeline beamed. “You should eat more, then. Do eat the egg I poached for you. It’ll help you grow taller.”
The girl stared at the poached egg on her plate and furrowed her eyebrows with disdain. However, she still complied with Angeline’s advice and forced herself to eat it.
The taste pleasantly surprised her. Whoa! What did Angel add to this egg? It tastes the same as beef and is super delicious!
Angeline placed the largest plate in front of Evander upon seeing him take a seat by the table. “You must be hungry, Mr. Golding. I’m sorry to trouble you with my matters.”
Suspicion flashed past his eyes when he heard that, but when he saw her fawning smile, he understood the meaning behind her actions.
Instead of exposing her, he looked down at his serving of pasta that was covered in numerous slices of beef before digging in.
“Well? How does it taste?” Angeline fixed her gaze on him with anticipation.
“It’s all right,” Evander replied plainly as though the pasta tasted average. However, the way he ate the pasta mouthful after mouthful betrayed him.
Cradling her chin with her palm, she grinned ingratiatingly. “I’ll do better next time. I’m sorry for offending you earlier. You’re not mad anymore, are you?”
Alas, he intentionally ignored her question and continued eating the pasta expressionlessly.
Angeline got anxious when she didn’t get a response, but she didn’t say anything. Instead, she simply enjoyed her pasta with the other two.
An unprecedented silence filled the dining room.
Floretta was so drowsy that she couldn’t stop bobbing her head while still holding the spoon. If it weren’t for Evander’s fast reflexes, she would’ve face-planted on her plate.
Seeing how tuckered out she was, Angeline suggested, “How about you let Floretta stay here tonight?”
“Okay.” Without hesitation, he carried the girl into the bedroom.
Following them, Angeline helped Floretta remove her bib and clothes. Since the girl was sleeping soundly, she turned off the lights.
After stepping out of the bedroom, Angeline grabbed her phone to check the time. It was already past ten at night.
Then, she turned to Evander, who was leaning against the door frame with crossed arms, looking completely relaxed as though this was his home.
“If you’re worried about her, you can stay, Mr. Golding. There’s still one more room here that you can stay in,” Angeline offered.
“No thanks. I still need to head to the airport tomorrow morning. I’ll be on a business trip for around a week,” he explained in a deep voice.
Due to the unexpected situation previously, he abandoned his work at Spaunia and flew back to Summerbank. Hence, he still needed to return to finish dealing with it.
“Okay,” she replied.
“Is it okay if I ask you to take care of Floretta while I’m gone?”
Angeline was still processing the fact that he would be on a business trip the next day when she heard that. From NôvelDrama.Org.
Flabbergasted, she questioned, “You’re asking me to take care of Floretta? I thought you were still angry about how I caused Floretta’s allergy.”
“She explained the situation to me. Aside from Francesca and I, no one knows about her allergy. So, I can’t blame you for it.” Evander’s tone sounded placid.
As he approached her with one of his hands in his pocket, he stared down at her. “I acted too rashly last time. I shouldn’t have lost my temper at you.”
It feels so surreal to hear him apologize to me. Angeline swallowed her tears and shook her head, pretending as though she didn’t mind. “Actually, I wasn’t angry anymore the moment I received your roses. Besides, I even blamed myself when Floretta got hurt back then.”
Arching an eyebrow, Evander inquired, “Roses?”
She blushed as she lowered her eyes shyly. “Yeah. I saw the card you wrote on the roses. I wouldn’t have found it if I wasn’t looking for it carefully.”
When Evander heard that, he realized something was off. After mulling over the facts, he glanced at Floretta’s room. I recall someone using my bank card after my argument with Angeline at the hospital. I even asked Sylas to check the transaction history of the card. With how intelligent Floretta is, I knew she wouldn’t be interested in some toy that’s worth a couple of hundred. She’s such an impish girl. But, I don’t think this is a bad thing at all. In fact, it can be considered a blessing in disguise.
When his train of thought ended there, he went along with the story and took credit for the girl’s effort. The look in his eyes softened as he said, “I’m glad you like it.”
Evander and Angeline discussed a couple more things about Floretta before the latter realized it was almost eleven.
Thinking that he might want to head home to rest, she proposed, “It’s getting late. You should return home and rest as soon as you can. You can count on me to take care of Floretta!”
“All right.” He stood and nodded.
Upon sending him to the door, she picked up his suit from the hanger and handed it to him. Then, she even helped him smoothen his tie.
She was wholly unaware of how intimate her actions seemed.
“Do you like me, Angeline?”
