Chapter 286
Chapter 286
“All right, stop jumping, or the security guard will come to catch you.”
Sebastian only calmed down after hearing that.
He then looked up at her and touched the wound on her forehead that was hidden behind her bangs.
“Pain...” he said with a worried look in liis eyes.
Nancy's eyes went wide with shock when she turned around and saw the wound.
“Oh, my goodness! He's right! How did you get your injured?”
Angeline and Joel exchanged glances upon hearing that. Noticing the apologetic look in his eyes. Angeline said, “I guess I just have a natural tendency to injure myself. Fortunately, it isn't anything serious, so you don't have to worry.”
“Fair enough. You always manage to get lucky somehow.”
Instead of arguing with her, Angeline absent-mindedly kept her gaze fixated on Evander until he was completely out of sight. Please check at N/ôvel(D)rama.Org.
Nancy wrapped an arm around her neck and whispered in her ear, “Tell me the truth. What happened? How did you two end up coming back together?”
“It was a coincidence. He happened to be doing business on Linlow Island. That's how we bumped into each other over there,” Angeline replied.
Nancy clicked her tongue.
“It looks like you and Evander are fated to be together. After all, you two are always bumping into each other everywhere.”
“Don't say that!” Angeline said while glancing cautiously at Joel, who was standing behind them.
Nancy then dropped the topic and drove them to a restaurant. She was really going all out to officially welcome Joel to the team.
Angeline was a little surprised when she entered the private room and saw Roger sitting in there. He looked a little bit like a hooligan with a pink T-shirt and floral shorts.
He was scrolling through his phone when he saw Angeline and the other's come in.
“Hi, Mi's. Golding! Hi, Nancy!” he greeted them with a smile.
As Angeline was not expecting to see him here, she stood in tire doorway and shot Nancy a questioning glance.
“I-It's a coincidence. This restaurant is really popular, so it's hard to even get a reservation here. Roger happens to be an investor in this establishment,” Nancy explained with a pout.
“Oh, I see. I remember you two getting into a huge fight the other day. It looks like you two are quick to kiss and make up, huh?” Angeline teased her with a mischievous grin.
Nancy burned bright red when she heard that. “No, we haven't! Don't you go saying that now! We haven't made up, so we're just friends at the moment.”
Of course, Angeline didn't believe a word she said. However, she could tell that Nancy was trying to keep it a secret, so she decided to keep her thoughts to herself.
There was a hint of helplessness in Roger's smile as he welcomed them to have a seat.
Due to his friendly nature, the atmosphere at tire dinner table was amazing.
Roger was so good at socializing that he even managed to chat up Joel, who was usually cold and quiet.
Angeline shook her head when she saw them happily chatting away. Feeling a little dizzy from all the drinking, she excused herself to the restroom.
After fixing her makeup, she was about to head back when she saw Roger standing outside the door.
He leaned lazily against the door frame and let out a drunken burp.
"Hey. Mi's. Golding...”
Angeline let out a chuckle when she heard that.
“You know, you really need to stop calling me that. Evander is going to get married soon.”
Roger shook his head helplessly before saying with an exceptionally solemn look on his face, “Do you really think Evander willingly accepted that marriage?”
The look in Angeline's eyes turned gloomy, and she tightened her grip on her handbag.
Of course, I have wondered about his reasons for accepting that marriage. However, Evander never told me his reasons, so I didn't bother asking him about it either.
Roger pulled out a cigarette from his pocket and lit it with a lighter. "On the day Evander publicly announced his engagement, Old Mi's. Golding fainted in the office due to a sudden heart attack. Despite how powerful Evander may seem, there are countless people trying to get at him. His worst enemy is liis cousin, Hubert, who used this opportunity to join Golding Group and has been abusing liis power ever since.”
Angeline took a deep breath and asked in a somewhat unnatural tone, “So?”
Roger's gaze bore into hers as he continued, “I know you've been mad at Evander for leaving you, Mrs. Golding. I've been friends with him for many years now, so believe me when I say that he did not make that choice willingly. Now, I'm not asking you two to get back together or anything. I just want you to understand why he did it.”
As Roger worked in public relations at Golding Group, he was really good at delivering his point while maintaining a neutral tone.
Angeline found herself starting to waver as she recalled how Evander had mentioned Hubert when talking to Sylas at the airport.
If he is being forced into this, why didn't he tell me about it? I would definitely understand if he'd just explain everything!
At the end of the day, it was all due to a lack of trust between them. Having trust issues could be extremely devastating for just about any couple in existence.
Meanwhile, the lights were still on in a certain high-rise building in the center of Hallsbay.
It was already past two in the morning when Evander ended his meeting and returned to his office.
Feeling exhausted, he slumped against his chair and massaged his aching temples with his fingers.
Given how things are, I can't afford to let my guard down. Hubert must've been well-prepared if he had the guts to do all of that under my nose. Dealing with him won't be easy...
“Here you go, Mr. Golding. Have some stew to warm yourself up,” Sylas said as he walked over with a bowl of steaming hot stew.
There was a hint of worry in liis eyes as he set the bowl down on the desk.
As Evander took a few sips of it, he recalled something and looked up at Sylas with bloodshot eyes.
“There's someone I need you to help me investigate,” he said in a deep voice.
“Who is it?”
Evander then opened his drawer and retrieved a photograph.
“Joel Quinn. He's the new designer at Forrester Group. I need to know about his late sister,” he said while handing it over to Sylas.
“Understood,” Sylas replied with a nod as he took the photograph over.
“Huh... Why does he look oddly familiar'? I feel like I've seen him before,” he mumbled while staring long and hard at Joel's facial features.
The look in Evander's eyes turned slightly gloomy when he heard that.
“Don't make any baseless assumptions. You need proof to back up all of your theories,” he reminded his assistant in a deep voice.
