“Vera, are you okay?” I came back from a reverie when I felt someone tap my shoulder, I nodded before sitting back at my table, I still feel the pain in my chest, but not like the other night.
It’s been two days after that night, but there is still some residual pain in my chest every time I’m breathing; I know it was not a dream, my book was in my bed, my unfinished glass of milk was still there, where I put it, even my clothes were the same after I woke up.
Fearing that it might be something serious, I went to see a doctor, but they saw nothing, and that made it so frustrating, people kept on saying that I should just rest, but I can’t, I mean, I rest up, I did what they advise me to do, but it’s not working, the pain won’t go away.
I tried to focus on my work; Sy had to go back abroad for some important matters, and we even had dinner before her flight, my supervisor was offering to take a week of a break since they feel that I’m not all right and politely took it down.
I feel a bit dizzy today, maybe because I haven’t been able to sleep and eat peacefully, no one could answer me fairly, and everyone insist that I should just take a break.
“Ms. Everleigh,” I heard a familiar voice, I instantly turned up my gaze, only to see Julian, standing in front of me, I haven’t seen him around for a while, “Your supervisor had informed me that you were a filling a vacation leave, is that true?”
I immediately waved my hand, “No sir, I didn’t, I uh, I have a lot of work to do,” I said and smiled at him, he was looking at me, and after a few seconds, he nodded.
“Alright, let me know if you need anything,” I gave him a slight nod, before returning my gaze to my laptop. I sighed and tried to focus on my work again.
It was past one-thirty when I felt my stomach grumbling; I was taken aback and looked at my wristwatch, I must be too preoccupied that I haven’t noticed what time was it, I pull out my bag and looked for my wallet, I left my phone since I will be back after eating, and I’m not expecting any call nor text from anyone.
I went straight to the cafeteria and looked for something to boost my appetite, I’m craving something that I don’t know, my period must be coming any day of the week, ugh, I hate this feeling.
I was about to order when I smell the dish, it made me feel dizzy, and nauseous, what the fuck. I immediately run to the nearest comfort room and vomit.
I sat on the floor, feeling weak, trying to catch my breath, “What the hell is happening to me? I can’t be pregnant, I don’t even have a boyfriend,” I mumbled to myself, I haven’t eaten any, so, I don’t know why I feel this way.
I sat still for I think a couple of minutes before I stood up and went to the elevator, I might have to breathe some fresh air. I went to the company garden, it’s a park near the building, but it was also owned by Zachary, I mean, the president. This place is where employees can relax if they are having a rough time at the office.
This park reminds me of the woods where I spent my birthday, I’m wondering what this park looks like at night, I haven’t been able to do overtime, since, I got to finish my work on time, and actually, I have respect for my time, like, if it’s time to go home, I will do it, especially, if there are no urgent papers to do.
“You’re having your lunch so late,” I startled when I heard someone talk beside me, “Why are you here?”
“Zachary, I mean, sir,” I blinked twice, faking a cough, “I uh, I didn’t notice the time, so I uh, had my late lunch,” I lied, I didn’t even eat nor drink anything.
He didn’t look at me, but he looked confused, “Are you okay?”
I slightly nodded, “Yes, you’re on your break too?” I tried to lessen the awkwardness that I’m feeling, I mean, I don’t like him as my boss, and I saw him nod in my peripheral vision. He loosen his necktie, he seemed a little sweaty, and uneasy, I can feel it. “I, uh, I will go ahead,” I didn’t wait for him to answer, I stood up and went back to the office.
I finished all my target deadlines for the day, I kept myself busy, to forget the time, and I succeed, my day became fast, one of my colleagues have to tap me, and ask if I’m leaving late than usual, and I said yes, I have to finish my work for today, this was the consequences of not being able to finish my paper works in this past few days.
Damn it.
It’s past ten in the evening when I successfully finish my work, tomorrow is my day off, so I can sleep until noon. I stretch my body and arm, I can feel my back sore, and the headache starts to fill my head, fucking migraine, I mumbled to my mind.
I turn off my computer and wore my jacket, before grabbing my bag, I went straight to the exit and was about to go to the elevator when I notice that Zachary’s office lights are still on. He’s still here? I haven’t seen him the whole day, so I th- oh, I saw him earlier, at the park, although, he looks bothered, or I must say, in pain?
I stood there for a minute before I decided to turn off his light, he must have forgotten to turn it off, or what, I saw it, I might just turn this o- “Zachary?” I was taken aback, he was kneeling down, he’s sweating all over his face and body, and he was just wearing his white sleeves, untucked to his slacks, “Hey, are you okay? Boss?” he wasn’t responding, he was just whining, silently.
“G-go a-away,” he mumbled, it was almost inaudible, “G-go, g-get o-out!” he tried to yell at me, but failed to do so, he was just clenching his chest.
“Hey, hey,” I tried to hold him, but he was just distancing himself, “Zachary, what is wrong? Let’s go to the hospital!” I said, panicking, I pull out my phone and was about to call an ambulance when he suddenly stood up and aggressively grabbed the phone in my hand, my eyes grew widened upon seeing him, and the realization hits me.
He is not Zachary! H-he, who the fuck is he!
