Howling Hearts

Chapter 77

Lucian:

I watched as my mate fell into herself clutching her knees as close to her chest as her baby belly allowed her too.

And although I heard the screams and the wails from her mother filling the air, I couldn't hear my mate crying, screaming or even breathing heavily.

As she started to regain her composure and started to stand up straight again, I felt her disappear within our bond.

Not in the way of death or the bond being severed, but simply like she was swallowed into a darkness and although I saw her standing right in front of me,

she was no longer the she wolf I had known and loved.

It's like a mask was placed on her mind and her feelings.Original from NôvelDrama.Org.

I stared into her soulless eyes and she just stared back at me blankly shrugging her shoulders before she made her way over to Saige's body.It seems that some sentences in this chapter require you to read the complete chapters on in order to avoid an incomplete reading experience. I tried to feel her emotions and I felt nothing. She felt nothing. I was taken aback by her blankness.

And I started to miss her conflicting emotions that had seemed to taken over her mind more often as the pregnancy progressed.

I watched as the silhouette of my mate became smaller as she approached her mother and sisters body.

She moved a stray hair that laid over Saige's nose to the back of her ear.

"Scarlet what have you done" Her mother wailed as she held Saige's head on her lap caressing her head as if though she was trying to soothe her.

I started to wonder how I would have felt in the moment and my eyes moved over to her father who stood a few steps away from them watching the scene before him frozen in time.

Although Saige wasn't a good person she was still their daughter. And a piece of their lives which would always be missing. "Nothing I didn't have to Celeste", I heard Scarlets' voice, cold and harsh. She stood on her feet again and walked towards the pack house. Her back straight and her head held high. I saw Layla starting to run after her.

When she reached her she placed her hand on Scarlet's back and tried to console her, but Scarlet didn't stop.

Not for one moment she kept on walking and soon they both vanished into the pack house.

Suddenly, whispers echoed through the air i growled at them all making them silent. I stared up at the sky.

The bright sky from moments ago was covered with darkness. An starless night and a half blood moon danced the night sky.

"Lucian" I heard an all too familiar voice call out to me. I looked over my shoulder and met eyes with the man that roamed my dreams far too long.

"Astraeus" I said in a questioning tone. "We've got a problem"

"You don't say" I said whilst looking back at the pack house.

I saw him out of the corner of my eye standing next to me on my right side and looking into the same direction.

Suddenly I saw movement on my left side but a much smaller silhouette. I whip my head into their direction and saw that it was the Moon Goddess. "Moon goddess" I greeted her and bowed slightly out of respect

"Please Lucian call me Selene you're my son how would you feel if I called you Alpha" I nodded my head in response.

"So Selene what's wrong with my mate?" I asked as I watched her in fear at what her answer might be.

She smiled a bit and I couldn't understand why. Someone had died just seconds ago and her daughter had changed completely and here she is smiling. "She's switched off her emotions" She said as she continued to smile and look at the pack house.

"What does that mean?" I asked looking between the two of them.

"It means what had happened was too hard for her to deal with so she just decided not to and block off her feelings and emotions for the time being.

However that causes a danger because whomever decides to do that doesn't think straight because they don't think about the consequences.

Simply because they don't feel any emotion and that includes fear" Astraeus continued. Suddenly, Layla came running out with a panicked look.

Searching the crowd to whom I could only assume was me. I stepped forward and the moment her eyes met mine she ran up to me and when she came closer I saw her teary eyes.

"What's wrong, Layla..... Speak" She shook her head and held her hand out, dropping a finger every few seconds as if she was counting down.

When all her fingers were down she took a deep breath. "Lucian Scarlets gone" She said in a broken tone. "Who took her?" She shook her head "No one she left on her own she's gone and I don't know where" "Layla. Why didn't you mind link me as it happened we could've stopped her before she left the borders" She shook her head once more. "She used her Luna tone Lucian I couldn't even though I wanted to"

I quickly linked Trey to gather the best of the best to search the border, pick up her scent and follow her.

I turned to try and find Astraeus and Selene but they both vanished as well. Making me wonder if they were as trustworthy as they claimed.

Was this all a decoy to have Scarlet run to them out of her own will.

I tried mind linking Scarlet but she blocked me out so I shifted and tried to pick up her scent. I followed it until I found myself walking in circles passing the same tree for the fiftieth time.

I became frustrated and started scratching and ripping at any tree bush and anything else that was close enough.

Where could she have possibly gone after promising me she would never run away again?
