Chapter 21 You Have to Be Careful
"Sam!"
Lillianna darted over and shouted anxiously, "Sam, why don't you pass her to me?"
She was baffled as to why he had to carry Lacey out.
"Sam!" Tilly approached him with a somber expression on her face. She glanced at the girl in his arms Original content from NôvelDrama.Org.
and gave him an icy glare. "What do you think you're doing?"
Sam replied coldly, "She's got a fever."
"Sam, give her to me. I'll take her home." Bailey came over as well. He raised a fawning smile and
added, "It's your engagement party tonight. We can't let her spoil it for you. Come on. I'll take her
home!"
Bailey reached out and was about to take Lacey from Sam's arms.
"She's not going home. She's going to the hospital!" Sam dodged his hands.
Bailey was stunned, and the corner of his mouth twitched. He responded with an awkward smile, "Yes,
I'll take her to the hospital right away. She must be running a fever. Hurry, hand her over to me!"
"It's okay. I can hold her!" Sam sounded indifferent.
"Sam, what are you doing—" Lillianna trembled and bit her lower lip. Why? Why was he so adamant
about not letting her go?
"There are a lot of people in the Carter family. Why are you the one taking her to the hospital? Do you
know what day it is?" Tilly despised Lacey. Her eyes were full of endless contempt.
Alvaro came over and ordered, "Sam, pass her to Mr. Carter."
"Yes, yes, pass her to me." Bailey humbly said as he leaned forward.
Sam's obsidian eyes showed no emotion. He stared faintly at the girl in his arms before looking up and
responding, "My clothes are soaking wet. I'll take her to the hospital myself, so your clothes don't get
wet too."
Only then did the crowd realize that Sam's clothes were drenched from holding Lacey.
Before anybody could react, he carried her out.
"Sam." Lillianna bit her lip. Her lashes fluttered, and she burst into tears.
"Don't cry, Lillianna. Sam is simply too kind." Tilly hurried over to her future daughter-in-law and
comforted her.
Lillianna shook her head. She gazed up to Tilly and said, "Aunt Tilly, I'm fine. I just don't think I'm doing
enough for my sister. I got Sam to worry about my family matters. It's all my fault."
"You're such a kind child. If your sister were half as good as you are, she wouldn't need your father to
worry about her." Tilly's affections for Lillianna grew stronger.
"Everything's fine. Let's keep going. He'll be back soon." Alvaro tried to calm the crowd.
Now that the wealthiest man in South City had spoken, no one dared to gossip.
Gradually, the party resumed its lively atmosphere.
Sophia, on the other hand, had been standing on the second floor, witnessing what had just transpired.
She approached over with a goblet in her hand and a faint smile.
"Lillianna~" She called out sweetly.
Lillianna immediately snapped back to her senses and looked over. "Oh, hey, Sophia."
"I see my brother has left." Sophia moved her gaze to the door.
Lillianna looked toward the door as well, and her eyes dimmed.
"Your sister, Lacey, is quite scheming." Sophia shook her head. "Do you suppose she did it on
purpose?" she asked, leaning in closer.
Lillianna looked at her in puzzled and asked, "What do you mean by that?"
Sophia explained, "Take a look at Sam. He's the picture of perfection. Many women are fond of him.
Perhaps Lacey does too. She is a small-town girl who's never seen anything big. Now that she's
witnessed my family's wealth and my brother's attractiveness, how could she not be impressed?"
Lillianna grimaced and appeared uneasy. "You mean—"
"It seems to me that Lacey is probably here to steal Sam from you!" Sophia gave her a very favorable
judgment.
Lillianna looked at her in shock.
"You have to be careful, my dear sister-in-law." Sophia issued a warning, then giggled as she left.
Lillianna returned her gaze to the door and began a flashback.
"I'm going to take everything from you. I'll destroy whatever you care about!"
As if realization dawned on her, Lillianna's eyes widened, and her fists clenched.
"Lacey, are you sick of being alive?!"
