Shirley walked over and opened it. The groom was Filip, and the bride was Lilian. A sarcastic smile crossed Shirley’s lips. She didn’t expect Lilian to actually succeed in climbing up the social ladder.
But soon, she noticed the smaller words beside the bride’s name on the invitation: Maid of Honor, Cynthia. It was unusual for a bridesmaid’s name to appear on an invitation. Shirley found it quite strange.
However, she had to admit that Lilian was quite capable. Filip and Cynthia had been childhood sweethearts, practically engaged since they were kids.
Despite their strong bond, Lilian not only married Filip but even had Cynthia, the “original fiancée,” as her maid of honor; this was truly remarkable.
On second thought, Shirley understood why Lilian would insist on it. Although Cynthia and Filip hadn’t officially registered their marriage, they had once held a lavish wedding that captured the entire city’s attention, inviting all of Roncrity’s elite.
And the entanglement between the three of them had always been a popular topic.
If Cynthia were willing to act as Lilian’s maid of honor and appear at her wedding, it would signify that they had reconciled, and no one could accuse Lilian of being a homewrecker.
After all, even the original francée had moved on, so it would be unreasonable for anyone else to keep giving Lilian trouble.
What truly impressed Shirley, though, was that Lilian had managed to convince Cynthia to be her maid of honor? A plan was already taking shape in Shirley’s mind. Tomorrow might just be the perfect opportunity. She slipped the invitation into her pocket.
Later, Shirley met Luke in a private room at a bar. The moment Luke saw her, he asked eagerly, “Did you bring the 2 million?”
Shirley noticed the thick bandage on his left pinky finger and asked, “What happened to your hand?”
The question made Luke grit his teeth in anger. That day, Cynthia had paid off 10 million of his debt, leaving only one million. But he didn’t have the money to cover even that.
The next day, he failed to scrape it together, and Oliver didn’t throw him into the crocodile pit but did have his pinky finger chopped off. The memory of that blinding pain still made him shudder.
Luke knew he couldn’t mention Cynthia’s involvement, as Shirley didn’t know he’d already sold her out.
He retorted, “It’s your fault for not showing up with the 2 million. I couldn’t pay, so they chopped my finger off. Shirley, you’re responsible for this, and you owe me another 2 million.” He just shamelessly blamed everything on Shirley.
Instead of calling him shameless as she usually would, Shirley smiled and said, “A mere 4 million dollars? That’s nothing Luke, do something for me, and I’ll pay you 16 million dollars.”
The mention of 16 million dollars made Luke’s eyes light up. “Tell me what you need. I’ll get it done.”
Shirley replied, “I need you to kill someone.”
Luke’s face darkened. “Shirley, murder is against the law.”
Shirley burst out laughing. “Someone like you talking about the law? How ironic.”
Luke’s expression turned serious, but he still asked, “Who do you want me to kill?”
“Cynthia Jones.”

At the mention of Cynthia, a flash of resentment appeared in Luke’s eyes. He’d love nothing more than to see that terrifying woman dead. But she wasn’t just anyone to mess with.
“Cynthia is the Bennett family’s daughter–in–law, and you know how powerful her connections are. If I kill her, I won’t survive it,” Luke said.
Although Luke wanted Cynthia dead, he knew better. Cynthia’s backing was formidable. Her ties with Edmund alone–let alone with the Bennett family–would be enough to ensure his downfall. He wasn’t that foolish.
Shirley continued, “Don’t worry. I won’t just leave you in the lurch. I know you’ve got connections; go buy a gun from the black market and show up at the Yates family’s wedding tomorrow.
“Cynthia will be attending too. Watch for the right moment and take her out.
“The scene will be chaotic for sure, and with the Yates family hosting all those wealthy and powerful guests, even if there’s security, they’ll prioritize protecting the guests, not chasing down the killer. That’s when you make your escape.”
Shirley went on, “I’ll prepare everything for you: 16 million dollars in cash in a suitcase, a new ID, passport, and a plane ticket. You’ll head straight to Damianus. The money is enough for you to live the rest of your life in comfort.”
Luke was stunned, clearly tempted. It wasn’t just the money that enticed him; the mention of Damianus had an undeniable allure.
Damianus is the most famous for its casinos, where fortunes could be won overnight. With 16 million dollars as his starting capital, Luke thought he might be able to multiply it tenfold.
Seeing his reaction, Shirley knew he was wavering. A gambler’s mindset differs from that of most people–they can never quit, even if it means losing everything, ending up on the streets, crippled, or even dead.
She had seen it with Dennis and knew this kind of person all too well.
For now, Luke saw Shirley as his golden goose. As long as he was alive, he would keep leeching off her, draining her dry, ensuring she never found peace in her life.
But Shirley knew that dealing with people like him wasn’t impossible; she just needed to push the right button. And for these people, gambling’s lure was irresistible; Damianus was their paradise.
Luke came to his senses and said, “Shirley, why should I trust you? Words alone mean nothing.
“If I kill her for you and you don’t keep your promise, I’ll be the one facing a death sentence while you rid yourself of your burden. Is that your plan?”
Shirley replied, “Luke, we’re in this together, aren’t we? You’ve got my most dangerous secret in your hands. If you were arrested, what would I gain from that?”
Luke stared at Shirley, thinking, ‘She seems serious. I am, after all, the only witness to her murder, and she believes Lhave recorded it. Belongs to NôvelDrama.Org - All rights reserved.
‘If she betrays me and I get caught, her crime will be exposed too, putting her in a hopeless situation. She won’t risk that.
‘I knew her game–to get rid of me by sending me off to a faraway place like Damianus, ensuring we’ll never cross paths again.
‘She’s clever, managing to find one last way to use me by eliminating her biggest threat.
Shirley pulled out her phone and showed Luke photos of an ID card, a passport, and a suitcase stuffed with cash.
She said, “I sold off our family’s heirloom to pull together this 16 million dollars. I’ve already arranged a new identity for you. I’ll book your ticket right now.
