Chapter 371
Chapter 371
Grace was wheeled out of the emergency room. The doctor pulled off his mask, and asked Allison
Zimmer, “Are you family?”
Allison hurried over. “I’m her daughter”
The doctor told her, “Your mom’s out of the woods now. She’s had kidney issues before, and she
passed out because of not taking her meds on time. As her daughter, remind her to take them.”
Allison gratefully said, “Thank you, doc. Thanks a lot. How’s my mom doing now?”
The doctor answered, “She’s pretty much okay now, but she’s gotta be careful in the future!”
Allison replied, “Got it, will do!”
Allison went to the room and saw Grace still unconscious, hooked up to all sorts of tubes, getting an
IV.
She sat by Grace’s bed, leaned close to her, felt her breathing, and her heart finally settled. She
carefully remembered the doctor’s words. Grace didn’t take her anti-rejection meds on time. How could
that be? She took her meds on time every morning and even carried them around just in case she
forgot.
This morning, Grace seemed fine when she left.
Every day, Allison would remind her. Ever since Grace suffered imprisonment and medication
deprivation by Leah at Mercy Grove Hospital, she’d been more diligent about taking her meds.
This didn’t add up…
It seemed that she would only know the full story once her mom woke up.
Grace woke up in the evening. Allison was reading by her bed, she heard her voice, and immediately
dropped her book to attend to her.
“Mom, you’re awake. What on earth happened today? You scared the life out of me.”
Grace was stiff all over, but she managed to say, “Allie, where are we?”
“We’re at the hospital! Mom, you passed out by the roadside, and a good Samaritan called the police.
The doctor said you forgot to take your anti-rejection meds. What happened, Mom? How could you
forget your meds?” Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org exclusive © material.
Allison noticed Grace was avoiding her gaze. Grace gave a bitter smile. I just forgot. I’ll remember next
time.”
“Mom, something’s not right. I know you didn’t forget. Tell me what really happened?’ Allison said
seriously.
*I really did forget, kiddo, would I lie to you?” Grace held Allison’s hand. “Don’t worry, I’ll be more
cautious next time.”
In response to Grace’s reply, Allison became skeptical. But clearly, Grace didn’t want to elaborate, and
seemed like she was hiding something.
Allison helplessly watched her. Grace had just gotten out of surgery, feeling weak, so Allison couldn’t
push her for answers. She had to let Grace recover first. “Mom, you should rest. The doctor said you
need to stay in the hospital for a few days.”
“Do I really need to stay in the hospital again? Haven’t I recovered? I don’t wanna stay in the hospital,
can you discharge me? The hospital bills are too high.”
“Mom, staying in the hospital is necessary! Under these circumstances, I can’t just listen to you. You
rest here, and I’ll go home and bring you some clothes.”
“Okay”
Allison went home, grabbed some of Grace’s clothes and a light blanket in case she stayed overnight
at the hospital. She saw a diary that fell out from the closet, her eyes lingered on it. But this time,
Allison didn’t pick it up to read, she just picked up the diary and put it back in its place.
She didn’t want to dig into her mom’s past anymore. All she hoped for was her health because she was
the only family she had. Everything else, she didn’t want to overthink. Everyone had their secrets,
including Allison herself. No one wanted their secrets to be known by others; she also didn’t want to dig
into Grace’s secrets.
As long as Grace could stay healthy by her side, that was enough.
She delivered the clothes to the hospital. Grace was already asleep under the influence of the meds.
Alison had a class in the afternoon but couldn’t leave. She sat on the chair, hunched over organizing
this morning’s lessons. In the evening, Allison took leave, she didn’t go to work at Red Jack Club,
letting Ashley cover her shift.
She stayed by Grace’s side the whole time.
She spent the entire night in a light sleep, waking up several times to check on Grace. Only when she
saw Grace was okay, did she relax.
