What Separates Me and You

Chapter 176 She Remembered

Seth would love to share this thrilling information with Lewis, but Lewis might just go off the deep end if he really did. Seth imagined Lewis’ expression and burst out laughing

Conrad scrutinized the photo his subordinate took and hesitated whether or not he should show it to Lewis. He recalled Lewis’ sulky face and immediately deleted the photo, pretending he knew nothing.

Conrad had no idea they were fighting over the divorce again, so he took that photo lightly.

When Lewis reached home at night, the mansion was empty. A set of clothes sat on the bed, neatly folded. It was the clothes Josephine wore during the day. Lewis’ temple throbbed when

he saw it.

Then, he received a message from Josephine.

“I changed out of the clothes but didn’t wash them. You won’t keep them anyway, right?” She continued in another message, “I kept my phone. I’m afraid you couldn’t contact me when we’re supposed to sign the papers. I’ll return the phone to you when we sign the divorce agreement.”

Lewis read the messages. Then, he scrolled upward and saw her previous texts, “Do you want to get dinner tonight?”

“Where are you?”

“What do you want to eat?”

Sitting on the sofa, he read through the messages and snorted.

He lit a cigarette as he leaned back into the sofa, his gaze fixated on a corner of the room as he smoked silently.

Shortly after, Conrad arrived at the mansion, braving the rain. He shook off the droplets on his body at the entrance before he briskly entered the living room and immediately spotted the ashtray on the table, brimming with ashes. “S-Sir?”

Lewis smoked calmly. His tone was composed when he asked, “Where is she?”

“Um, let me find out.” Conrad immediately pulled out his phone and went aside to make a call.

After the incident with Seth, someone was assigned to shadow Josephine, but he would only

report to them if something happened.

Conrad listened to the man’s information, and his face turned upset.

He looked at Lewis and said hesitantly, “Um, sir, Madam is…is hanging out with the youngest son of the Fowler family.”

With a cigarette between his fingers, Lewis leaned on the sofa. He didn’t show any response to Conrad’s reply as though he had seen it coming.

Minutes passed, and Conrad felt like he was standing on pins and needles.

After a while, Lewis asked abruptly, “Is it true that I have been too controlling over her?”

Conrad’s mouth twitched, thinking, “So, you knew, huh?”

But, of course, he dared not say that openly. He could only answer, “Sir, you’re merely doing it for Madam’s sake. She can’t speak and would have no way of asking for help if anything happened to her. Besides, given her naive nature, it would be as easy as pie for others to deceive her if she came in contact with the outside world. More importantly, she would be an easy target for people with bad intentions to use against you, sir.”

Lewis heard the last sentence and smirked. “To use her against me?”

Conrad sensed something off with his tone and immediately added, “But, of course, no one could pull that off.”

If Conrad hadn’t seen with his own eyes how determined Lewis was when he leaped off the

cliff, he would have believed Lewis.

Lewis was probably still in the delusion that everyone was oblivious to how concerned he was for Josephine. As a matter of fact, it was clear to almost anyone.

But it could also be that Lewis couldn’t hide his true colors that well anymore due to Josephine acting out more frequently these days.

However, that came with a downside-people like Seth and Kiran were starting to notice.

Josephine.

“What should we do? Should we bring Madam back?”

Lewis didn’t answer his question. Instead, he asked, “Quintin adopted a herd of stray animals,

hadn’t he?”

“Yes…What do you have in mind, sir?”

Lewis took another puff and didn’t answer him. Conrad saw his thoughtful eyes, and chills ran down his spine.

Meanwhile, Josephine was at Quintin’s pet shelter.

There was a bed for her there. After Quintin realized she wasn’t inclined to go home, he

brought her here as it was equipped with beds. Content (C) Nôv/elDra/ma.Org.

He brought her to the hostel, turned on the lights, and said, “You can stay here. Everything’s prepared except for the furnace. It may be a bit cold at night.”

It was a studio flat. The room was medium-sized, and there was a bed and a washroom.

As Quintin helped her to put on the sheets, he explained, “We have many rooms here, but only Jack stays here. Some volunteers would occasionally stay over for a night or two.” He added, ” These sheets are new.”

Josephine nodded, gratified. She signed, “Thank you.”

Quintin scratched his head and said, “You’re welcome. Have a good rest. I’ll show you the newborn puppies tomorrow morning.”

Quintin left after Josephine agreed.

Josephine sized up the room. The room was made of planks and looked cozy.

She washed up and took her medicine. She had to take two medications now. One was

prescribed by the doctor yesterday, and the other was from Dr. Halliday.

She must take the medicine Dr. Halliday gave her, or else her illness would deteriorate rapidly. She couldn’t see the effects now, but at least it was under control.

She could recall most of her memories intermittently. An average person wouldn’t remember some things when he wasn’t thinking of them intentionally.

The difference between her and an average person was she wouldn’t be able to even if she tried her best to recall.

After taking her medication, Josephine picked up her notebook to jot down that day’s events while lying on the bed with her belly facing downward.

After she was done, she kept the book in her bag, went to bed, and turned off the lights.

She tossed and turned, unable to fall asleep-perhaps because she was in a new place.

After tossing about for two hours, Josephine thought of something and felt around for her phone. She opened her Whatsapp.

Regretfully, there was no reply whatsoever from Lewis.

She lay on the bed, the glow from her phone shining on her pale and disappointed face.

She had brought up the issue of divorce many times before, but he used all means to decline

her request. However, this time, he seemed resolute in pursuing the divorce.

She couldn’t drink and had embarrassed him before his clients last night. Besides, her

presence at the event wronged his clients somehow.

That was why he was furious and disappointed with her.

Josephine shut her eyes, trying to shut out those tangled thoughts.

She should be glad for the divorce–she was finally free. She shouldn’t be thinking about all

these.

She opened her eyes and clicked Lewis’ profile picture on Facebook to see his wall.

It was empty. “That’s right. He never posted anything on his account. There’s nothing to see,” she thought to herself.

She was about to exit the app when her gaze fell on his profile picture. It was greyish. She couldn’t see clearly what was in the photo as it was small. She couldn’t help but click on it to enlarge it.

After enlarging the photo, she could finally see clearly. It was a photo of two brown dolls.

But the photo was taken at a very close angle, and the photographer had amateurish skills. She couldn’t see the full image of the dolls.

However, at a closer look, she identified that the dolls were sitting close together on a rack, looking amicable. One of the dolls’ arms was broken and had been stitched back on.

The person who stitched it back did a pretty flimsy job, so the doll’s arm was shorter than the

other.

Josephine’s eyes sparkled as she kept on zooming in on the photo. Suddenly, she remembered.
