Chapter 209 Promise You’ll Marry Me

“What are you saying?” Lewis suddenly spoke, interrupting Sierra’s incessant chattering. Sierra was taken aback. She stared blankly at Lewis’ expressionless face, and her fantasies came to an abrupt halt.

“Well, since you’re divorced now, don’t you plan to marry me?”

“Who told you I got divorced?” Lewis retorted.

Sierra replied, “Josephine just said so herself. Besides, she wouldn’t come to the movies with another man so brazenly if she wasn’t divorced, right?”

She deduced that Josephine wouldn’t have the guts to do such a thing if she was still married to Lewis. Otherwise, how could she dare to go on a date with another man as a married woman? She had to be divorced to do that.

Unexpectedly, she didn’t receive any form of confirmation from Lewis regarding the matter. On the contrary, her blabbering made his already grim expression darken further. He remained silent and walked away, leaving Sierra behind as he headed toward the parking lot.

Sierra stood still in her spot for a while. Within a few seconds, her emotions went from being on cloud nine to being down in the dumps. She knew Josephine wouldn’t lie, and she wasn’t willing to give up.

Hence, Sierra chased after Lewis. She then grabbed his hand and looked at him with a pitiful expression. “Lewis, tell me the truth. Are you and Josephine really divorced?”

“I think I’ve made myself very clear just now. What were you hoping to hear?”

Sierra opened her mouth to speak. Of course, she wanted to hear from him that they got divorced, and she wanted to hear Lewis’ promise that he would marry her. After all, she’d been waiting for this for so long. Her youth and time were all spent on him without reserve, waiting for the day when he would give his word that they would walk down the aisle.

She finally saw a tiny glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel, but Lewis’ reply thwarted that little bit of hope she had. How could she accept that?

Lewis stared at her with a solemn gaze. After a few seconds, he finally said, “Stop overthinking it and get in the car.”

His answer was still ambiguous, leaving Sierra immensely frustrated as she didn’t know where she stood. She sulkily opened the car door and got in. Feeling chagrined, she turned her head to one side and looked at the gloomy night scenery outside.

Sierra couldn’t ascertain what the actual situation was. She contemplated, “Is Lewis still not divorced? Or is he already divorced but has no intentions to marry me?”

If it turned out to be the latter, just the thought of it made Sierra feel suffocated. What was she

On the other hand, Quintin brought Josephine to his pet shelter, but before entering, he sensed that something was off. The iron gate of the shelter was wide open, and it was eerily quiet inside. Furthermore, when his car lights illuminated the area ahead, he could faintly see several cars parked inside.

Quintin slammed on the brakes hard. Josephine nearly slammed into the dashboard in front of her as she was lost in thought. She lunged forward, and the seatbelt across her chest almost. choked her. She looked at Quintin in confusion, but he’d already gotten out of the car and run.

off.

Realizing something was amiss, she quickly got off and followed him.

They sprinted into the shelter hurriedly. The lights inside were dim. Unlike before, Quintin wasn’t greeted with the dogs’ enthusiastic barkings when he arrived. Instead, the entire shelter was deathly quiet.

Quintin seemed to realize something, and he suddenly rushed toward the sheds. Before he reached them, he saw several figures standing in front of the cages from a distance.

“It’s all taken care of, Mr. Fowler.”

“Are they all dead?”

“Yes, not a single one survived!”

Upon hearing the conversation coming from the shadows, Quintin’s legs went weak, and his whole body slumped to the cold ground.

“Dad…”

Hearing Quintin’s trembling voice, the men who were speaking in the shadows ceased their conversation. After about a minute, several figures emerged from the darkness. Damian’s face gradually became visible in the light as he walked toward Quintin. Seeing his father’s familiar face, Quintin’s pale face turned even more ashen.

“So, this is what you do all day?” Damian stared at him coldly, his stern face showing only indifference and callousness.

Josephine came to Quintin’s side. She glanced at him and bent down to pull him up from the ground. Quintin pushed her hand away and got up on his own. His eyes were filled with anger and resentment as he glared at Damian fiercely.

“Did you kill all the animals I raised?”

Damian’s reply was devoid of any warmth and was cold as ice. “They were merely livestock. Are you going to sever ties with your own father just because of a few animals?”

Quintin clenched his fists tightly, his chest heaving rapidly.

Seeing him in this state, Damian sneered, “Look at the pathetic state you’re in right now. Did I raise to do such meaningless things? If word goes out that my son is dealing with these animals all day long, how should I face all those people outside, hmm?”

“Enough!” Quintin suddenly shouted, his voice trembling either from anger or sorrow. “What is considered the right thing to do in your eyes? Am I supposed to be the same as you? Should I sleep with a celebrity today, a model tomorrow, and get myself a mistress the day after that? Is that what you think I should be doing instead?”

Smack!

A loud slap echoed through the shelter, and Quintin’s voice came to an abrupt stop.

Damian was incensed; he glared at Quintin with a face full of rage. “How dare you talk back to me with such nonsense! You dare to yell at your own father over some mere animals. What a good son I have!”

“Mere animals?” Quintin smiled bitterly. “They may be worthless animals in your eyes, but in mine, they were all living, breathing beings who deserve to live just as much as we do! You have committed so

many sins and never atoned for any of them. Yet, you continue to do evil and kill so many innocent lives. Do you know how many lives you’ve ended here today?”

The more Quintin spoke, the more emotional he became. He thought of those adorable little furry creatures, how they wagged their tails and circled around him, and now they had all

turned into lifeless bodies. His eyes reddened, and tears welled up in them.

“Three hundred! You’ve killed over three hundred lives!”

Damian, upon hearing this, became enraged in response. “How absurd! Lives, you say? They’re just animals-food on the table! If you’re so kind, why don’t you show sympathy when you eat meat, huh? Those meat on your dining table; those were lives too. Why don’t you save them, then? Go and change the world for all I care. Why don’t you try to make everyone go vegetarian?”

After a slight pause, Damian coldly snorted, “Lives, eh? You talk to me about lives, but you’re wasting your life putting your effort into meaningless things like this!”

Quintin was rendered speechless by his father’s accusations, and all he could do was glare at Damian with resentment. Begrudgingly, he had to acknowledge that Damian was right to

some extent.

“What’s the matter? Cat got your tongue? Show me how much love and compassion you have for those animals, then. Come on, kill your old man and avenge those cats and dogs of yours!”

Quintin’s chest heaved violently as he stared at his father, unable to utter a single word.

The cold night wind howled, and silence filled the air. Josephine fiddled with her fingers, finding it difficult to bear such an eerie silence.

Father and son continued to stare each other down; neither was willing to back off.

Suddenly, Quintin laughed. “So, at the end of the day, if I don’t do as you wish, anything I do is worthless to you?”

“That’s right! This is a waste of time. I’ll never allow my son to squander his time on these

animals!”

Quintin smirked and chuckled mockingly, saying nothing else. He realized that anything he said would be in vain. Anything he said wouldn’t make a difference; those animals would never

come back to life.

On the other hand, Damian was also tired of arguing with him. He gave his son an emotionless glance before leaving with his men.

Before he left, he had a few more words to say. “Reflect on yourself. I didn’t raise you to adopt stray animals here. Let me make it clear. If I ever find out you’re still taking in any animals, I’ll eliminate them one by one until you completely abandon this idea!”

Upon hearing this, Quintin swayed, and he staggered a few steps. Josephine hurriedly went to support him, preventing him from falling.

Quintin’s hands balled into fists, and his knuckles cracked. With his back turned against Damian’s retreating figure, he muttered, “Being your son is truly a tragedy.”

His voice wasn’t particularly loud, but in such a quiet environment devoid of any other noise, Damian still heard it.
