eyes.
After Lewis finished sliding her feet into the slippers, he raised his head to look at her.
Their eyes briefly met, and something flashed across his beautiful eyes. It was so fleeting that Josephine almost didn’t notice it in time.
Then, Lewis got up to his feet. In the midst of doing so, he frowned as his form started leaning dangerously to the side. Fortunately, he grabbed hold of the banister just in time to avoid falling to the ground.
Josephine quickly stood up to steady the man. Worry was now etched all over her face.
He hung his head just to catch his breath for a moment. Once he lifted his head again, his expression was emotionless as ever. Still, he raised a hand to pat Josephine on the head.
“I’m fine. Don’t worry.”
Josephine stared at his face for a moment. In the end, she chose to believe his words, so she released her hold on him.
Her phone happened to ring just then.
The
young woman turned around to glance at her phone, which was sitting on the coffee table. She had an inkling that the pink phone belonged to her.
Josephine didn’t hesitate to leave Lewis on the balcony as she headed indoors to answer the call.
When she picked up her phone, she noticed that Quintin was the one calling her. She hesitated for a moment, but she still slid the “answer” button and placed the phone next to her ear.
“I thought you were going to keep ignoring me. Thank goodness you finally answered the call,
Quintin said from the other end of the line. “It’s going to be the holidays soon. Are you planning on visiting somewhere this year?”
Josephine didn’t respond since she was unable to talk, which confused the other man to no end. “Didn’t you learn how to speak back then? Why aren’t you saying anything now?”
The moment his words fell, Josephine felt the phone being snatched from her grasp.
“I can help you out if you feel very lonely, Mr. Quintin.”
The moment Lewis’ voice drifted through the speaker, the other man instantly fell silent.
A few seconds ticked by before Quintin replied, “Are you with her right now?”
“The answer is rather obvious, isn’t it? Why must you ask such ridiculous questions?”
Quintin grumbled loudly, “You’ve already divorced her! Why do you insist on chaining her next to you?”
“What does this have anything to do with you?” Lewis retorted.
“What the hell? She’s my wife now! Lewis, do you have a weird fetish or something? Are you only pining for women who happen to be other men’s wives?”
The glint in Lewis’ eyes was snuffed out right away upon hearing Quintin’s accusations. “It seems you have yet to learn your lesson, Mr. Quintin.”
Quintin chuckled loudly, this time in anger. “What are you going to do this time, huh? Are you planning on cutting off someone else’s fingers? Perhaps you’re going to take another innocent life, hmm? You want me dead, right? I’m waiting for you, Lewis! Come at me if you dare!”
Once he was done growling out his response, he ended the call immediately, still furious about the phone call.
Lewis tossed the phone back onto the coffee table while shooting a glance in Josephine’s direction. It didn’t matter to him what sort of expression she was showing on her face.
She wouldn’t remember a single thing anyway.
“Are you hungry?”
Josephine nodded in response. It was true that she was famished.
Lewis called the hotel’s reception line so that he could place an order for room service.
Once dinner was served in their hotel room, Josephine dug in ravenously at the dining table..
The man just sat next to her and watched her eat.
Since she didn’t remember anything, it was natural for her to stop feeling sad or depressed about what happened to her. All she cared about was fulfilling her needs-she would eat when she got hungry and sleep when she was tired. She didn’t have to waste any energy worrying about anything else.
Once Josephine woke up from her sleep, it would be a brand new day for her.
She was living a pretty good life, in a sense-that was if her condition didn’t worsen.
The only silver lining in this situation was that Josephine would always remember Lewis no matter how much her memory deteriorated. That man would forever live on as a core memory.
Whenever she opened her eyes and saw his familiar face, she would be reminded of her amazing past. That way, the young woman would feel very safe and protected, completely devoid of any fear toward him.
Once Josephine was done eating, Lewis took her to the bathroom for a bath as per their usual
schedule.
After filling the bathtub with warm water, he had Josephine sit inside the bathtub so that he could bathe her meticulously.
The man had no idea just how much Josephine’s memory had deteriorated, but what he noticed was that she no longer blushed whenever he bathed her nowadays.
She stripped her clothes right before Lewis as if it was the most natural thing to do. After that, she got into the bathtub obediently.
Lewis remembered that Josephine refused to let him bathe her once she hit 13 years old.
That year,
she learned about the biological differences between boys and girls. Whenever Young Lewis offered to bathe her, she would lock him outside the bathroom with flaming cheeks.
After that, she would patiently explain to him that the biology teacher had taught her about the differences between boys and girls during her biology class, so she should avoid being too close to him.
However, Young Lewis always ignored what Young Josephine said. The next day, he would still insist on bathing her even though he always ended up getting chased out of the bathroom.
When was the next time he was able to bathe Josephine after that?
Perhaps it was the time after they got married.
Josephine knew everything about relationships and marriage. She knew about the marital duty a married couple performed in bed, so naturally, she knew all about love between a man and a
Woman.
Meanwhile, the woman kept playing with the bubbles that floated on the surface while allowing Lewis to wash her hair and body.
Just as the latter was immersed in his memories, he suddenly felt warm water splashed onto. his face.
His
eyes regained their focus as he fixed his gaze on Josephine’s face.
She was smiling at him while splashing the water in the bathtub. In fact, she was currently splashing more water at his face mischievously.
Water droplets slid down his face, making him look quite wretched. However, Lewis continued to stare at Josephine pointedly without reacting to what she did to him.
The smile on the latter’s face soon faded away, now replaced by a look of confusion as she gazed back at Lewis.
Josephine still remembered Lewis pretending to glare at her seriously before splashing more water on her face using the same method every time she pulled pranks on him during
bathtime.
Sometimes, if he got mad at her, he would grab the showerhead and start spraying more water at her face. At that moment, she would dive underwater to avoid his attacks.
Of course, there were times when Lewis would tell her sternly to stop messing around.
Never did the man stare down at her wordlessly with a dark expression on his face. He looked very scary when he did that.
Josephine lowered her hands awkwardly, not daring to move an inch afterward. So, she could only sit in the bathtub like an obedient student who had just got reprimanded by the teacher.
Lewis was silent for a moment before raising a hand to wipe the water off his face. He had Josephine stand up before rinsing the suds off her body and wrapping a towel around her.
Once he was done, he carried her to the bed and used a hair dryer to dry her hair.
Josephine could sense that he was in a bad mood, so she just sat there without fidgeting around.
Only the loud sounds of the hair dryer whirring could be heard in the room for a while.
By the time Josephine’s hair was completely dry, Lewis put down the hair dryer and raked his fingers through her sleek and silky hair.
At the same time, he stared at her for a very long time. He attempted to move his lips just to say something several times, but he always failed.
Josephine tilted her head innocently while staring at the man unblinkingly the whole time.
A while later, Lewis finally found his voice. While caressing the young woman’s hair, he asked, “How old are you this year, Josie?”
The latter raised her hands to gesture back in response. “I’m 11.”
This caused him to pause in his actions.
Josephine raised a hand to caress Lewis’ cheek gently. Then, she placed both hands on both. sides of his face and started turning his head around to study him.
A frown soon appeared on her face. “Louie, you seem to have changed.”
Lewis just stared at her silently.
The young woman was starting to feel intimidated, so she shrank away from him timidly before grabbing the edge of the blankets and diving under the covers. All that was left was her head, which poked out of the covers just so she could sneak glances in the man’s direction.
Lewis stood up abruptly before walking over to the couch. After sinking onto the couch, he started smoking right away.
Josephine tilted her head while staring at him without moving.
His elbow was propped on his knee while he trapped the cigarette gracefully between his fingers. Wisps of smoke already shrouded his face by then, so Josephine was unable to see what his expression was like.
He seemed to be unhappy.
The young woman didn’t know what she did to piss him off.
After sifting through her memories for a moment, she realized that she couldn’t remember the cause at all. It was rare for Lewis to get mad at her, after all.
Josephine thought for a while before flinging the covers off her and getting out of bed. She didn’t bring any pajamas, so she was currently wearing Lewis’ shirt, which was loose and big. enough to reach her thighs.
She walked over to Lewis’ side without wearing her slippers and sat next to him. Then, she slipped through the gap between his elbow and his hand, which was still holding the cigarette, and hugged his neck affectionately.
The young woman could not care less about the consequences, which almost resulted in her hair being singed by the burning cigarette.
Thankfully, Lewis was able to move away from Josephine in time.
He realized he was just inches away from Josephine’s face when he lowered his head.
