Chapter 3: Have Nowhere to Go
Chapter 3: Have Nowhere to Go
‘Climbing the social ladder?’ Caroline's chest rose and fell.
‘If I really was just busy doing that, then how could Nigel Corporation end up in such a state?’ She hadn't had the chance to refute as someone from the outside was calling for the groom and bride to hurry up.
Aldrich hugged Riane's waist and said gently, "Darling, let's go." Content © copyrighted by NôvelDrama.Org.
"Wait" Caroline held her torn clothes together on one hand and stretched out her other hand.
"You haven't paid yet."
In that instant, the murderous glint in Aldrich's darkened eyes almost made Caroline lose her composure.Still, he took out a cheque and a pen from his pocket. He quickly signed it and tossed it over.
"It's only half done.25,000 dollars for you!"
Caroline picked up the cheque on the ground and looked at the man who had left, her eyes blurry.
Her clothes were already torn beyond repair, and she could only find a tablecloth in the lounge to wrap around her.
Fortunately, the guests were up the center stage and nobody noticed her.
It was easy for her to sneak. As she went out, she heard the groom say gently, "I do."
The way he spoke it so firmly was as if he was making a solemn oath.
Caroline felt bitter inside, but she only lowered her head and quickly left. She was never meant for him.
They could only part like this.
She rushed all the way to the hospital, but as her mind was preoccupied, someone who was riding a motorcycle passed by and managed to snatch her bag.
Caroline was shocked and hurriedly chased after him, but how could she run after a motorcycle? She watched helplessly as the motorcycle disappeared with the bag that contained the 25,000 dollars which could save her sister's life.
Caroline fell to the ground in despair. She only stood up when someone passed by to help her call the police.
It was already afternoon when she had finished going through the process of reporting the stealing incident.
She hurriedly returned to the hospital, but she was only at the door of the ICU ward when she saw the doctor hurrying over.
"Why didn’t you answer your phone? Your sister's operation just now required a signature, and her family members weren't there ..."
"How's my sister?"
Caroline met the doctor halfway down the corridor and asked.
"We can only treat her cautiously." The doctor sighed.
"Fortunately, she has recovered now.Have you paid your follow-up fees?"
"I—"
Caroline lowered her eyes.
"I'm still thinking of a way."
Under the complicated gaze of the doctor, she left the hospital building and bought a cheap phone for two hundred dollars.
She transferred her sim card and waited for a call from the police station. She waited until it was already nighttime when she was finally notified that the thief had been caught, but the money had already been transferred, so it would take time for her to get it back.
Caroline felt numb in her scalp. She held her head, trying her best to remain calm. Her sister's life was at stake.
If she could not pay the follow-up fees …
Sighing, she made a decision and went home to pack up all her things.
It was said to be everything, but in fact, it was only two boxes.
She called the landlord that night and begged for a long time before he finally agreed to refund her the remaining six thousand dollars from her advanced rent and deposit.
Then she dragged her luggage all the way across the streets.
She didn't even know where she was supposed to be going.
When she reached the bridge, she stopped and sat along the sides. She watched the bright moon hanging high in the sky, illuminating the dark abyss. She suddenly thought, ‘At this time, Aldrich and Riane should be having their honeymoon, right?’
Caroline woke up with an unbearable body pain and a headache in the early morning of the next day.She hadn't realized that she had fallen asleep and ended up spending her night on the side of the
bridge.
After tidying herself the best she could, she picked up her luggage and resumed her walk.
She stopped by a pawnshop and glanced down the ring on her palm.
It was something that her mother had told her to never lose, but she was already at her wits’ end to care about sentiments.
The pawnshop clerk couldn't see the value of the ring, however, so he asked Caroline to wait for a moment and walked inside.
Coincidentally, the pawnshop owner who rarely ever came was here today.
When he saw the clerk holding something, he casually said, "What is it?"
The clerk's eyes grew wide when he realized it was the big boss.
This was his first time meeting him so he was trembling slightly as he said, "Boss, I was just about to let Hugo take a look"
"Let me see" the man said.
He took the ring handed over by the man, and when he saw the patterns and inscriptions on it, he suddenly raised his head.
"Who's the owner? Take him to the reception room.I want to see him!"
With that, he quickly made a phone call.
