What Separates Me and You

Chapter 223 Did He Dump You Already?

Josephine looked up into the bear’s motionless eyes. Suddenly, the black beaded eyes moved and woke her up with a start.

She opened her eyes to dazzling brightness.

She looked out the window and realized it was already morning. Beside her, the bed was empty.

She sat upright in bed, her calves aching. She flipped the blanket aside to examine her legs and noticed they were still swollen, though less painful than before.

Josephine extended her arm and pinched the swollen area. She inhaled sharply in pain.

The bedroom door opened all of a sudden. Lewis entered with a food tray and sat beside her.

Josephine’s gaze fell on him. He wore a black shirt and a silver vest, showing off his slender waist. He exuded frigidity when dressed and had probably fooled many with that.

Lewis took the bowl on the tray and brought a spoonful of broth to her mouth. “Open your

mouth.”

Josephine obeyed him, her eyes glued to his face.

Lewis fed her spoonful after spoonful, and Josephine ate it all.

She was starving. It felt like she hadn’t been eating for days. She gulped down all the broth

Lewis fed her.

Lewis glanced at her. “Why are you staring at me?”

Josephine pressed her lips together and withdrew her gaze, staring at the broth instead. She heard him sigh before feeding her another spoonful. Soon, the bowl was empty.

Lewis asked, “Do you want more?”

Josephine nodded.

Lewis stared at her for several seconds. Suddenly, he chuckled. It grated on her ears. Josephine looked up, but he was already walking out.

He returned after several minutes with another bowl of broth.

Josephine felt better after finishing the second bowl. She shook her head, indicating that she couldn’t take anymore.

Lewis placed the bowl on the tray, picked up the tray, and stood. “Have a good rest. Don’t get out of bed unnecessarily. You get that?”

Josephine nodded solemnly,

Lewis glanced at her a few more times before leaving with the tray. And he never returned.

Josephine sat like a doll on the bed. She never got out of bed, even when she felt the urge to go to the toilet; she held it in with all her might.

She was contemplating whether or not to leave the bed for the toilet when someone rang the

doorbell.

Josephine thought of Dr. Halliday, who came yesterday-it could be him.

She gave up going to the toilet. Enduring the pain, she went downstairs and opened the door.

She was stunned when she saw the person standing outside. It was none other than Sierra.

Sierra stood at the door, covering herself from head to toe. Through her shades, she sized up Josephine.

Suddenly, two faint barks came from somewhere in the house. Sierra stopped scrutinizing Josephine and entered the house.

Josephine tried to stop her, but Sierra shoved her aside before she could do so.

Josephine stumbled but managed to stop her fall by grabbing the doorframe.

Sierra swept her gaze all over the second she entered.

White sheets covered some of the furniture in the mansion, speaking volumes of what had happened.

Sierra shot her a glance. “That’s what I thought. I thought it was weird for Lewis to come here all of a sudden last night when he had been staying with me for the past few days. You’re the reason.” She walked up to Josephine. Holding her chin high, she took off her shades and glared at Josephine haughtily.

The look she gave Josephine resembled how the lady of the house would look at her husband’s lover. She continued, “You said you and Lewis are divorced. Is that true?”

Pausing, a look of surprise crossed Josephine’s face. The word “divorced” echoed in

Josephine’s head as she wondered if she and Lewis had gotten a divorce.

Sierra saw her reaction and flew off the handle. “You were the one who told me that! Have you forgotten? You said you are divorced, didn’t you? Show me the certificate!”

Josephine pressed her lips tightly. She shook her head, indicating she knew nothing about that.

“Why, you-“Sierra raged, “You damn mute! Are you playing a trick on me? Everything here is covered up. Besides, I stopped by two days ago and saw the seal on the door. How can you say you’re not divorced? You fucking mute. How can you be so shameless? Pestering Lewis even after your divorce! Aren’t you already seeing Quintin? What now? Did he dump you already?”

Josephine paled as she listened to Sierra.

Sierra smirked. “Well, look at you. You probably can’t survive another day without a partner.”

Sierra finished her speech, and her eyes darted around the mansion. She marched in and turned everything upside down, trying to find the divorce certificate. She decided to look for it herself since Josephine refused to show it to her.

Josephine watched as Sierra flipped through the stuff in the mansion as if she owned the place and couldn’t help but frown.

Dragging her aching legs, she approached Sierra, grabbed her arm, and shook her head.

Sierra looked at her with despise. “What are you doing? Get lost!”

Sierra impatiently shook Josephine’s hands off and continued searching. ConTEent bel0ngs to Nôv(e)lD/rama(.)Org .

She didn’t find what she was looking for downstairs and was about to go upstairs when Josephine blocked the stairway, denying her access to the upper floor.

“Move!”

Josephine spread her arms to block the stairs, not intending to give in.

“You useless mute! I said, move!”

Josephine’s eyes blazed as she stared at Sierra. She didn’t back down one bit. She raised her hands and signed, “This is my home. You, go out.”

Sierra only understood some of it, but she dismissed the rest. She grabbed Josephine’s arm and shoved her aside. “You and your signs. Move!”

Her shove caused josephine to land heavily on her bottom on the stairs. Her bottom hurt, but her legs hurt more.

Sierra went past Josephine and waltzed up the stairs.

Josephine tried to stand. However, she had strained a muscle on her legs when she plopped to the floor seconds ago and couldn’t stand just then.

She sat on the stairs, listening to Sierra’s heels clicking about upstairs. She sighed.

Suddenly, she heard puppies yapping again. It was very faint.

She focused and listened intently. She got up when she confirmed it wasn’t an illusion and followed the direction of the sound.

To her surprise, she found a cage with puppies in the storeroom.

Josephine brought it to the living room.

The two puppies hopped inside the cage when they saw her, desperate to come out.

Josephine stared blankly at the two puppies. She had no idea how the puppies got there, and very young ones at that.

She opened the cage, and the two puppies bolted out and ran all over the mansion.

The first thing they did was to ease themselves at the doorway, leaving behind them a puddle. and two piles of stool.

Josephine stared at the puddle, and her mouth gaped. Lewis would go mad if he saw this. She hurried over and tried to catch the puppies to return them to the cage.

But the puppies were overly mischievous. They scampered before Josephine could reach them. They sniffed everything everywhere and even bumped over several dustbins, scavenging for food among the trash.

Josephine stayed put, bewildered.

Just then, Sierra descended the stairs. “Just as I thought. See, I found it!”

Josephine looked back when she heard Sierra and saw the glaring divorce certificate.
