What Separates Me and You

Chapter 225 Don’t Be Naive

Lewis frowned when he saw the divorce certificate. “Where did you get that from?”

Sierra stole a glimpse at Josephine and headstrongly said, “She gave it to me, of course. I came here to ask her whether it was true that you were divorced. She was afraid I wouldn’t believe her, so she showed it to me.”

Josephine stared at Sierra, listening to her manipulating the truth. She didn’t react.

Lewis glanced at Josephine. “Did you give it to her?” Text © by N0ve/lDrama.Org.

Josephine merely shook her head.

Upon seeing that, Sierra hurriedly chipped in, “You damn mute! You were the one who gave this to me! Why are you feigning innocence? Lewis, this is your divorce certificate. How would I know where you kept it if she hadn’t given it to me?”

Lewis said nothing, but he looked miffed.

Josephine pressed her lips together and stared right at Lewis. She knew he would believe Sierra. After all, Sierra spoke with reason, whereas she couldn’t even defend herself-she was a mute who couldn’t talk.

However, Lewis snatched the divorce certificate from Sierra, ripped it to pieces, and threw it on the floor.

Sierra was so stunned she forgot to treat her wound. “Lewis, you.

Lewis tugged her arm and pulled her along. “Let me send you to the hospital.”

Sierra was reluctant. He always avoided the topic whenever such incidents occurred. Divorce was no trivial matter. Even so, was Lewis not planning on confronting the issue?

“Lewis, are you saying we should let her be? Look at the wounds I suffered!”

Lewis replied coldly, “How do you want to settle it then? Do you want to bite her back?”

“I…” Sierra was rendered speechless. She would love to do just that but couldn’t bring herself to do the same. She only wanted Lewis to pay Josephine back on her behalf or, at least, side with her.

But what did he mean by that? Was he going to sit on the fence?

Lastly, Sierra said, peeved, “I’m not a dog. Could I bite a dog just because it bit me?”

Lewis replied, “Then let’s go to the hospital.”

He didn’t retort to Sierra’s comment about Josephine acting like a dog. Sitting on the floor, Josephine lowered her eyes, her face burned where Sierra had slapped her.

It didn’t burn on only one cheek. The other side felt as if Lewis had slapped her too-the flirtatious exchange between Lewis and Sierra was like a slap in her face, leaving her

embarrassed.

She didn’t even know what standpoint to assume as she sat there.

Sierra was worried her wound would contract an infection, so she ceased arguing. Besides, the argument seemed to be going nowhere based on Lewis’ attitude. Conversely, he might ignore her if she pissed him off.

Sierra used a tissue to wipe the saliva and blood around her wound and left.

“Why are you not wearing any shoes?”

Sierra answered snappishly, “Ask that mute. She left two piles of dog shit at the doorway. No matter what, the Alvarez family raised her. How did an aristocratic family end up raising such a vile person? Indeed, a peasant will always be a peasant even when she moves to the palace.”

Lewis didn’t rebuke her. He walked on in front of her, seemingly deaf to her words. He opened

the car door for Sierra to get in.

Although they had entered the car, Josephine could still hear Sierra’s scolding and Lewis’ silent connivance. Josephine’s mouth twitched. Sitting on the icy floor, she burst out laughing, and her tears streamed.

The puppies ran toward Josephine and trotted around her, licking her fingers. One leaped on her leg and sniffed her.

Josephine looked down, and her tears dripped off her chin onto the puppy’s head. She raised

her hand and caressed its head.

On the way to the hospital, Sierra kept lamenting about Josephine, berating everything regarding her.

Lewis lit a cigarette and cut her off impatiently, “That’s enough.”

Sierra glared at him and said, enraged, “Look at what she did to me! Why are you standing on

her side? Am I not allowed to chastise her now?”

Lewis said, “The mark on her face… you slapped her, didn’t you?”

Sierra almost choked. She defended herself, “She bit me! Was it wrong of me to fight back?”

“I remember telling you before not to go to Styx Mansion. It looks like you have the memory of a goldfish.”

Sierra was stunned. She looked out the window with a guilty conscience, mumbling, “I wouldn’t have gone if you were still married. But why can’t I now that you’re divorced?”

“We aren’t divorced.”

Sierra laughed angrily. “Do you think you can disregard the divorce just because you tore the certificate?”

Lewis didn’t reply to her.

“Why did you lie to me about your divorce? Are you that unwilling to marry me?”

Lewis was silent for several moments. His silence turned Sierra’s heart cold.

“Speak!” She paused before continuing, “Stop the car!”

This time, Lewis heard her. He pulled over with an emergency brake. Then, he looked at Sierra.

Sierra’s eyes spat fire at him.

Lewis said, “I won’t marry you even though I’ve divorced Josephine. Do you understand?”

His words stabbed Sierra right in the heart. Her wrath turned into sorrow, and tears welled in

her

eyes. She sobbed. “Why?”

Lewis calmly said, “You knew how it was when I married her. Do you think they will agree if I were to marry you?”

“Why do we need approval from others to get married? If you truly loved me, you’ll marry me despite the challenges… You have never thought of marrying me, have you?” As Sierra spoke, her tears rolled down.

Unfazed, Lewis looked at her and asked abruptly, “Do you love me?”

“Of course I do! Why else would I be with you all this while?”

Lewis laughed. “Will you say that if you truly love me?”

Sierra paused. She had no answer for that. She stared at Lewis, but she couldn’t understand him no matter how much she stared.

Why would he treat her kindly if he didn’t love her?

He gained nothing from her but gave her everything besides marriage.

Sierra was silent for a long time before she asked in an upset tone, “But… aren’t two people in love with each other supposed to be together? They keep each other company and overcome all difficulties until they unite in marriage.”

“Don’t be naive.” Lewis ruthlessly wrecked her fantasy. “Marriage and love don’t always come together. Play your role as you may but try not to lose yourself in it. You stand to gain nothing from that.”

Was he mocking her for watching too many soap operas?

Emotions flashed in Sierra’s eyes. Indeed, she had never heard of incidents in which noblemen from the aristocratic familles gave up everything they had for true love when she was with

Lewis all this time, mingling among the nobles.

They had seen too many exotic ladies and had fallen in love with one too many, but, to them, love was merely an occasional victory of the hormones. They were never short of people to love, and love came easily to them.

She was considered an exception to Lewis, so much so that people of this rank treated her respectfully.

Realization dawned on Sierra as she discovered she had forgotten her identity and the

differences between her and Lewis. She had lost herself in the illusion Lewis created for her.

Thinking of herself as a unique existence, she had always thought Lewis would fight the world

for her.

From others’ viewpoints, her thoughts were truly naive.

Sierra wiped her tears and sobbed as she asked, “Then who will you marry?”
